It is well-known that sleep is crucial for a healthy body and mind. However, many of us struggle to get a good night’s sleep. This impacts our overall wellbeing in many negative aspects. Sleep deprivation can cause lack of concentration, sleepiness and long-term health issues.

Light helps our bodies prepare to sleep or wake up. Natural blue light helps makes us stay more awake while red light makes us sleepy.

However, in our modern era we are surrounded by artificial light which tricks our bodies and suppresses the release of melatonin, which respectively leads to disruption of our biological clocks. Blue light in particular, emitted by devices such as smartphones and tablets makes us stay awake for longer and breaks our natural sleep cycle.

According to a study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and primary care, nine out of ten people use their smartphone before bedtime and this affects their sleep quality poorly.

So, the questions is what can we do? The National Sleep foundation has several recommendations for healthy sleep habits. Some of them include:

  • Choose quality bedding

At Double Jersey it is our mission to provide you with high quality cotton fitted sheets. Cotton is a versatile natural material that is kind to the skin, breathable and easy to maintain. Looking for more reasons to choose or bed sheets read our previous blog posts on cotton and thread count.

  • Disconnect from your devices before bed

Disconnect from your devices 30 minutes or more before going to sleep. This allows your brain to wind down and prepare for sleep, while browsing the Internet keeps it occupied and alert.

  • Lower the lights

We emphasized that light plays a crucial role when it comes to sleep. Avoid turning on bright lights, especially ones emitting strong white light. Try to use muted light with red-orange undertones.
